  Fated to Be Here

It’s been over a year since fate landed me in this beautiful place. Through sheer luck and a tiny bit of effort, I managed to secure a place here at Dhaka University. Looking back, I realize I was always meant to be here. I am saying this because I did try to challenge my fate’s decision and applied to go to a different place but it somehow didn’t work out. Life gave me two chances to choose and each time I chose ESOL over the other and I was convinced that I really belong here.

My merit position at the DU test wasn’t quite high enough for the English department, though I did have the chance to study English at Rajshahi University in the first attempt. Yet, even after enrolling at DU, some personal incidents led me to apply to RU again. When history repeated itself, I chose ESOL again.

Well, I have always been fond of the language itself more than just the literature. And ESOL allows me to dive even deeper in the language to such an extent where it prepares me to become eligible to teach English to non-native speakers. And in my first academic year, I also get to explore a completely new language: Spanish. I can not help but fall so hard for this subject and immerse myself in the arena of language. Probably this is why when life took me back on the same boat of deciding between DU ESOL or RU English, I chose ESOL again. Or probably, ESOL chose me.

I have to mention my teachers also. The teachers of our department and also the guest teachers that taught our courses all were extremely talented and knowledgeable. Under their guidance we could improve ourselves for better and delve into the language further. Our Spanish course teacher, Tarif sir, made my Spanish learning journey in my first year incredibly interesting and easy—I enjoyed it the most. Thanks to him and all the teachers. I also have to thank my English teacher from high school, Kashem sir, who taught me English beyond the curriculum for the first time and introduced the way of learning the language, not just the subject.

My freshman year in university has been incredibly amazing. I do hope and pray to Allah that I may become able to embrace the journey ahead to develop a true mastery of the languages that I am studying. I also pray that I may keep the honor of the choice that fate made for me and I may also use the language and the knowledge gathered here for the betterment of humankind and against any evil of humankind. Ameen.
