If education is the key to a country’s development, should this key be available only to those who can afford it?
Education is a basic right. However, tuition fees often become an insurmountable barrier for underprivileged students. Too many hardworking individuals are forced to abandon higher education because of financial constraints. Although government scholarship programmes exist, they remain insufficient to cover all necessary expenses and reach only a fraction of eligible students. Therefore, ensuring affordable access to university education should be a priority for the government.
University education requires substantial financial resources, but that does not mean accessing it should become a burden for students. The government should not view education merely as an expense; rather, it should consider it an investment in the country’s future. When people receive higher education, they can become skilled professionals, create employment opportunities, provide essential services, and contribute meaningfully to society. Thus, spending on education should be understood not simply as a cost, but as a long-term investment that can generate social and economic returns.
The government should also recognise that a student’s family background should not determine whether they can pursue university education. A talented student should not have to abandon their aspirations simply because their family cannot afford tuition fees and other educational expenses. If a country aims to build a skilled and productive workforce, it must ensure that capable students are not denied higher education because of their financial circumstances.
